BIOGRAPHY

Soul Baraitser studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton, graudating in 2023, and later went on to study at The Royal Drawing School (Drawing Year), finishing in 2025. Currently living and working in London.

Soul Baraitser’s work explores large-scale drawing with charcoal, pastels, inks, collage and handmade papers, alongside smaller works of woodblock printing and etching. She is interested in testing materiality—pushing fragile paper media toward disintegration, tearing, and fraying, while also repairing and mending during the process, allowing images to slowly appear from the surface itself. Through their scale and texture, these works become sculptural, existing as both image and object whilst demonstrating how drawing can hold presence and weight despite its perceived delicacy.

Thematically, Baraitser’s practice engages with the unconscious, dreams and nightmares, and how such psychological phenomena might be given material form. The imagery often centres ambiguous groupings—gatherings, huddles, crowds, families—caught in dramatic yet uncertain events. She is drawn to the ambivalence of human interaction: the vulnerability of gesture to misunderstanding, the visceral experience of shame, the tension between violence and care, and the shifting atmospheres of emotional and physical presence.
